Comma Paints With Cars

And a bike, a go-kart and a truck as well! We commissioned motorsport artist, Ian Cook, to create a unique piece of art to celebrate the launch of our biggest ever promotion, in which we’re giving away £2 million worth of race event tickets!

Ian is well known in motoring circles for using remote control cars as his paintbrushes, but for the first time ever he’s used real racing cars to create a unique 10m x 5m painting that illustrates the huge variety of motorsport disciplines race fans will see for free as a result of the promotion.

After 40 hours painting with radio controlled cars in his studio, Ian spent a further eight hours at Brands Hatch circuit using a go kart, a Caterham R300, Jolyon Palmer’s FIA Formula Two Championship single-seater, a racing bike and a 6-tonne Truck Racing lorry to finish the art work!

Want to see how you paint with a 6 tonne truck? Play the movie or click the thumbnails below to view our picture gallery.

Sun - check. Canvas - check. Artist - check. A van full of paint and inks - check! And here comes the cherry picker... gotta' get the right angle for the photos.Having already completed 40 hours work in the Studio, Ian warms up the best way he knows how - with a remote control car.Ian moves onto the first of his larger vehicles - a go-kart, to create an area of track in the image. As the motorway digital boards often say... "Think Bike". Here comes Steve Miller on his BMCRC Suzuki SV650 racing motorbike.Ian, it's gonna' take forever using those tiny paint pots…... But the easy pour, pull-up spout on Comma's 5ltr Performance Motor Oils provides handy paint pouring dispensers. (Don't worry, Comma Performance Motor Oils aren't bright red!)Here comes the Caterham R300 driven by Simon Lambert... Too much throttle could shred our canvas - and take out our artist! The F2 car is designed for maximum power - not it's turning circle! But those Avon tyres do a great job with the huge swathes of red!Jolyon Palmer introduces his F2 car to its artist's impression... just like looking in the mirror. You don't see something like that every day! The BBC wanted to know what Jolyon thought of driving on canvas compared to driving on track.Slowly does it. Ian directs Graham Powell in his truck around the painting - the tread on the tyres gives great texture. And that is how you paint using remote control cars, a go-kart, a bike, a Caterham, an F2 car and truck! Ian Cook, PopBang Colour - we thank you!
