Imola, San Marino, Italy – Rounds 13&14 Review20/09/2009Kazim Vasiliauskas makes motor racing history when he becomes the first Lithuanian to record an international race victory in Race 1. The teenager from the town of Kaisadorys is in his first season of single seater racing, and only celebrated his 19th birthday in August. Qualifying for pole ahead of Bortolotti, Aleshin, Wickens, Eng and Soucek, the youngster survives a torrid series of incidents and deployment of the safety car to keep his nerve and win by nearly eight seconds from Bortolotti, with Soucek third. The final podium place is sufficient to earn Soucek the inaugural FIA Formula Two championship title with three races still to go, and a date to test with the Williams Formula 1 team later in the year. The 24 year old Spaniard - who has put his GP2 experience and a test drive in a Toyota F1 car to good effect in taking the title - celebrates by winning Race 2 ahead of his nearest championship challenger, Robert Wickens, with Serbia's Milos Pavlovic revisiting some of his early-season form in third place. With the title race done and dusted in his favour, Soucek can look forward to an ecstatic reception from his home crowd when the season winds up in Barcelona at the end of October. For the rest of the field, there remain the minor places to fight for, with half a dozen drivers still in with a statistical shot at the runner-up spot. |
