Matty Graham clinches Winter Series BRDC Formula 4 title

29/11/2013

By scoring a second place podium in the opening race and victory in the third to add to the two wins he registered at Snetterton a fortnight ago, Matty Graham secured the BRDC Formula 4 Winter championship title at Brands Hatch over the weekend of November 23rd/24th. Switching to the Douglas Motorsport Team from the Sean Walkinshaw outfit - with whom he finished fourth overall in the regular season standings - the 17 year old Graham from Edmundbyers, County Durham clinched the eight-race Winter series with fourth place in Race 2 and sixth in Race 4 to claim the title over runner-up Jake Cook by 14 points.

Proudly carrying Comma's colours and driving for the HHC Motorsport Team, 16 year old Will Palmer confirmed all the potential he had signalled with a podium finish at Snetterton on his debut foray into single seater competition by winning the opening race at Brands with an assured lights-to-flag victory in which - despite coming under serious pressure from the more experienced Graham and Cook in his wake - he never put a wheel wrong,. With sixth place in Race 2 and fifth in Race 4, a pit stop to change his front wing in Race 3 was really all that stopped him from claiming fourth place in the Winter series championship. There is clearly as bright future for Comma's youngest standard-bearer as he follows his elder brother Jolyon and father Jonathan into the higher echelons of the sport.

Emphasising the competitive nature of BRDC Formula 4 as it wound up its inaugural season to establish itself firmly now as Britain's foremost junior single-seater competition, victory in Race 2 went to Palmer's HHC team-mate Sennan Fielding and to Hillspeed's Kieran Vernon in Race 4. Fielding had shown strongly in the early rounds of the regular season before missing the last five rounds, while 23 year old Vernon was making his F4 debut after finishing fifth for Hillspeed in the 2012 Formula Renault BARC series. Fielding enhanced his win with a third place podium in Race 4, fourth place in Race 1 and fifth place in Race 3, while Vernon took the runner-up spot in Races 2 and 3 and fifth place in Race 1.

While Rotherham-based Jake Cook did not add to his two victories carried over from Snetterton, he scored third place podiums in Races 1 and 2 and a brace of fourth places in Races 3 and 4 to keep the points ticking over and claim the Winter series runner-up spot on his Formula 4 debut.
